Barndominium
The initial concept for this structure was centered around two distinct uses; a well-equipped woodshop and a space combining an office, podcast studio, and trophy room for entertaining guests. These contrasting functions were expressed architecturally as two distinct volumes unified under a continuous, thin roof.

The 4,000-square-foot building was evenly divided between the two uses. The woodshop took the form of a rectilinear volume clad in vertical wood siding. A clerestory band of glass separated the roof from the wood facade, creating the illusion of a floating roof while providing abundant natural light to the workspace. Clean, sharp edges were emphasized through metal detailing at the top and bottom of the wood siding.

The trophy room served as the centerpiece of the opposing volume, reflecting the client’s passion for nature and the mountains. The interior of the entertainment space was designed with mountain dioramas displaying the client’s trophies circling the space. The exterior was designed as an inversion of these dioramas, mimicking a boulder, with strategically placed windows contrasting its organic shape. These openings maximize views of the surrounding property while allowing light and views of the office spaces.

As the project developed, the client’s needs evolved to include a rapidly expanding business and additional farm-related functions. This design was set aside to accommodate expanded programming requirements, with further developments forthcoming.
